"It's a bonding experience for the dog and the owner; obviously the physical fitness part of it is component number one. The dog obedience component is product number two," said Deanne Collinson, A 6legs to Fitness instructor; a program created by dog trainer Brad Pattison. The medical director of the Calgary Animal Referral and Emergency Centre says certain research shows up to 50% of dogs could be obese: "arthritis is exacerbated by carrying around extra weight, heart disease, respiratory track disease, some kidney ailments, diabetes can all be associated with a pet being overweight," said Dr. Danny Joffe.
