Sitting down for a meal is tough for a lot of Calgary families. But "Your Business" has found a solution. Shelley Swirski found a local company that has dishes "dashing" into homes across the city.
"Adding a little pepper... Some red wine..."
Those are just two of the ingredients for business success for Dashing Dishes, a company that caters to young couples, singles, the elderly, and those busy families with kids who just won't eat.
"To hear that their five-year-old daughter rarely ate chicken and they had a Dashing Dishes meal and they loved it, or just to see people coming back for the meals, it's gratifying," said Kim Grech, who owns the business.
Since setting up shop a year ago, she and her husband Michael have seen their business grow to the point where it's all they can do to keep up. Several times a week, at community centres across Calgary, there are 14 tables set out, each representing a different meal. Clients move from table to table creating as many as 14 dishes to take home, freeze and use later.
"It's really easy for us when I don't know what i'm going to cook. All I have to do the night before is pull it out. It's prepared, it's cut, and I don't have to shop," said Debbie Schotanus, a Dashing Dishes client.
The Grech's fashioned their business after seeing something similar in the U.S. a few years ago. They add as many as 50 new customers each month and gave had to double up their number of sessions. They had record sales in September. The demand is huge, but there's one big challenge.
"We have requests from many communities even outside Calgary to come to them, but because of the way the Calgary market is right now, with staff shortages and so forth, it's a bit of a problem finding enough staff to meet the demand that we're seeing in Calgary," said Kim Grech.
With business going so well, Dashing Dishes has a dream of expanding and one day having franchises across Canada. But for now, their focus is on families closer to home.
"It's nice to know I'm helping people sit down at the dinner table instead of going through the drive thru at McDonald's.
