Ask any mom, and she'll tell you her job is tough. Especially for new moms, who find that staying home with the kids can get pretty lonely. But there's a new way for Calgary moms to find plenty of company. Byron Chu explains how one Calgary mom linked hundreds of others - online.

It's playtime at the Raposo household - a time not just for kids to colour and play hide-and-seek - but also for a group of moms to enjoy some adult conversation. Britt Raposo set up today's group by simply posting the event on her website, http://www.calgarymoms.com/. A stay-at-home mom with two little girls, Raposo set up her website in March of last year, just to find other moms to talk to.

"I think it's for sanity reasons," she said. "There's no place for all moms to get together and do playgroups, and have moms' night outs, and do a retreat."

Calgary Moms is the website where moms can do all those things. It has forums where members can give advice, share information, and set up group events and activities.

"Little did I know there were so many moms out there looking for the same stuff I was," said Raposo. So many, that Calgary Moms already has more than 1,800 members, each paying a 20 dollar annual fee. They post hundreds of messages online every day.

"By finding that site, i was able to find moms that had kids the same age, and go out and do things with people in the neighbourhood, across the city, all over the place," said Jo-Ann Pentelichuk, who described herself as a slightly older mom with a home business.

"I've met so many wonderful people, and I've got better friends now than I did even in high school," said Jennifer Smith.

"We share a lot of advice and tips and struggles on the boards, so it's the most amazing network. It really reminds me of a small town, where everybody knows each other and you have somebody to turn to for support," said work-at-home mom Robyn Colvin-Smith.

Because Calgary Moms meet online, without ever seeing each other, they all wear a blue plastic bracelet. That way, everywhere they go, other Calgary Moms can recognize them.

Raposo's website has been so successful, she's started similar sites in seven other provinces. She's also created a website for work-at-home moms, http://www.calgarywahms.com/, and a weekly radio broadcast over the Internet at http://www.calgarymomstalkradio.com/. The broadcasts can be downloaded onto an iPod for the listening convenience of busy moms, and they cover a wide range of parenting topics, like traveling with your baby for the first time.A co-host of the program, Robyn Colvin-Smith, is just one of dozens of moms who volunteer their time to keep the website running.

"It's so much fun. (Have you ever done radio before?) No, I've never done radio, I'm actually a teacher, but moving out to Calgary, I wasn't sure I wanted to go back to teaching.... I just sort of fell into this, but I like the sound of my voice so broadcasting was a very good choice for me," said Colvin-Smith.

It has all been a bit overwhelming for Raposo, who has turned a website into a successful home business. All because her needs as a mom struck a chord with so many others.

"I think all the moms are looking for the same thing. They all want friendship. They all want someone there that deals with the same thing," she said.
