Everywhere you look it's fast food, fatty foods, trans-fatty foods, refined sugars. It seems everything we put in our bodies these days is bad for us.

Logan Mercer knows all about it, "I knew it was an accumulation of the drinking not eating right not sleeping right, everything was adding up."

So he decided to detox.  "You gotta be prepared for it," says Mercer.

A detox flushes all those toxic substances out of your body. Mercer went to Courtney Ayley who hooked him up with a bowel cleanse.

"So this one you would pre-cleanse for three days so you would eat raw foods, salads, fruits for three days," informs Ayley, "and then for 5 days you would take organic apple juice and put it in here with a toxic absorber."

The Detox is like eating straight apple sauce, taken with digestive simulators to pull built-up waste out of your system.

"This is for you to lose what is called your 'black lining' which is 7 lbs to 15 lbs of fecal matter." The results sometimes aren't pretty. Neither are the detoxes.

"Your skin, you'll notice a difference in your skin," Ayley contends, "Your energy levels, drinking water you'll feel amazing after you detox. I believe everyone needs to detox."

Nutritionist Andrea Holwanger disagrees.  "I don't suggest them for my clients."

She says your liver and kidneys already do the job of ridding your body of toxins and detoxes can end up stripping your body of healthy bacteria.

"I would probably stay clear of anything that suggests eat one food for a week or longer because I really don't think that's beneficial." Holwanger says. "In fact you're going to be missing out on a lot of nutrition in the course of that."

While Holwanger recommends staying away from detoxes, she does say that if a detox means not taking in any processed junk foods, that is a good move.
