New Year - New You: Homeopathy
Bryan Labby on taking the natural way toward better health.

At least one Calgary family swears by it.  It's homeopathy, a series of natural remedies that might improve your health, and reduce your dependence on prescription drugs.  It looks like a routine visit to the doctor for Kelly Mitchell but it's not.  The 46 year old stock broker is checking in with his homeopathic doctor.

"The doctors here put you on a program depending on what's wrong with you".  And there was a lot wrong with Mitchell.  "I had stomach problems, every time I ate wheat I get a real cramp in my stomach".  That means no break, pasta and pizza.

Suggestions from his regular doctor didn't work so he turned to this alternative form of health care.  "I started taking the homeopathic remedies, and it took probably about a year, now i eat anything, it's totally gone," Mitchell says. Mitchell's wife Stacy is also a patient and so are their kids.

As Stacy tells us, "It's been the best thing for our family, it's been three and a half years, we don't use any prescription medications, we haven't had any antibiotics in three and a half years for anything, you know it's been quite profound."

The homeopathy medicines are all natural like fish oil and evening primrose oil.  They usually come in liquid form.  You simply take several squirts several times a day.

Dr. Vijay Nielsen explains the concept.  "Homeopathy is a personal system of medicine.   What it does is, it uses micro doses of natural substances to help bring back balance to the body.  It gets to heart of problems and alleviate your symptoms at the same time."

Dr. Nielsen says some of his patients with high blood pressure have been able to get off their prescription drugs, while others have cut down on their reliance on antibiotics.

This alternative form of medicine is not covered by Alberta Health Care.  What Dr. Nielsen offers is pricey.  There's a $200.00 initial consultation and follow up visits can cost the same.
