What are you having for dinner tonight? The people who wrote the new Canada Food Guide are hoping you will check it before you chose.
Dietician Samara Felesky Hunt say we're now being told it's OK to eat some of the so-called good fats."They do lower cholesterol and risk of disease."
One of the biggest changes to the guide is its portion sizes and number of servings based on age and gender. For meats and alternatives a pack or pork or a can or beans would be enough for one day.
A woman between the ages of 31 and 50 should base her daily diet on this many servings per food group. The breakdown also includes recommended servings for children and teens. The new food guide also includes new ethnic food choices. Pita, Nan Bread, couscous, kinwa, barley, fortified soy milks, tofu.
It also wants us to choose leaner meats and more fish. The new guide also puts more emphasis on fruits and vegetables. It seems to be making an impact.
Mom, Kelly Hewson says she thing about it a lot. "This morning I started my daughter with cantaloupe, banana and apple, and I think she was just like aggghhh but it's a start, so we had three of the list."
