Heath McCroy recalls the day, nearly two years ago, when his 36 years old wife had a fatal encounter with a Bear. "I was too grief stricken and shocked. I was simply over whelmed with it," says McCroy.
The attack happened on a trail in Canmore. Dube was jogging with two other women. The Grizzly chased her 60 feet up a tree. Jean McAllister and the other jogger ran away. "But we felt pretty good that she would be able to climb really well, but the bear was really determined to go after her," says McAllister.
Heath McCroy lost a part of him that day in June when his wife Isabelle died. "I think the shock part of the tragedy is wearing off and some of the grief. Now it's more reality," says McCroy. It's been a painful journey, but he is keeping her spirit alive through a Website that's dedicated to keeping others safe. "It is there mostly to create awareness and give the public a better awareness just how dangerous it can be out there and to be better prepared.
Trailex.org was the brainchild of Jennifer Statham, who was moved to action after learning about Dubes' tragic death. "Isabelles personality would have wanted that. She would have wanted that, because she knows we are not going to stop biking, and horseback riding in the back country," says Statham.
The site has grown since it first was launched almost a year ago. What started as a e-mail list grew to about 100 people circulating amongst friends. Now the Website has more than 25,000 visitors and 400 people signed up for e-mail posts.
The Website allows users to share wildlife information in the Bow Valley, from Lake Louise to Bradd Creek. People can view postings before choosing where to go for a hike, run, bike or mountain climb. They can also post messages of Bear sightings.
