"I was really excited about getting a computer," says Yvonne Winkler. Her boyfriend Scott Davis and her found a computer online. "We found this HP9000T. Basically brand new in a box and it was on the local site," says Davis. So they emailed the man selling the lap top on
http://www.kijiji.com/. The man sent them back an email with specific instructions, to wire the money through Western Union and address it to TNT Agent Craig Hilton. "You know I even made a point of circling it and I said it's going to TNT, right? And she said yeah," says Winkler. Davis adds, "TNT will then verify that the information is in order and deliver it to your door step". The computer was never delivered, and that's because they followed Hilton's instructions and wired the money to him, not TNT. "The money never went to the company in trust of TNT, it went to this person," says Winkler.
We contacted TNT and asked to speak to Craig Hilton. "I have no idea who Craig Hilton is," says Zahid Kari, the Supervisor of Customer Service for TNT. He adds, "frankly he is a scam artist just using our name". Craig Hilton, was nowhere to be found and Winkler and Davies are out $510 dollars. According to TNT, there's nothing they can do about the scam. Adding that TNT.com is a business to business delivery company, which only deals with company accounts. But Davis and Winkler, believe that TNT.com should have a warning about the scam on their website to warn others. "Had there been something on TNT's website, saying hey guys be aware there is some scams out there using our name that would have triggered some flags with us," says Winkler.
TNT.com has said they'll look further into this matter and as for kijiji.com the owners say, scammers are often red flagged and removed within a couple of days. So when shoppers online, remember it's buyer be ware.
