Over the years fairy tales have come a long way. "If you actually read any of the original Brothers Grimm fairy tales they're actually kinda gruesome," explains Calgary playwright Jeremy Mason.
Mason, and his co-playwright Nicolas Hayes, won an award for their, less than traditional, fairy tale for children's theatre in Calgary last year. "We wanted to write a play based on a classic fairy tale, and we kinda sifted through a bunch, and we thought, 'Rumplestiltskin' was a good one because it was never done by Disney before. So we did it," says Mason.
The script is in production in southern Alberta. According to Mason, it has a lot of modern twists. He says, "The king, as some of his penalties for Viola not spinning straw into gold would be, to plop the royal bowling alley down on top of her father's shoe-shop."
