Joanne Dorn is coping with the loss of her friend, and a young boy whose life was spared.
Flowers and words of support are placed along Bridleridge Way S.W. That's where Linda Davey was killed by an SUV last week, while walking with her 15 year old son, Josh who is recovering in hospital.
"We're focusing on the recovery of Josh right now," says Dorn. "We're all pulling for him and keeping our fingers crossed that he's going to come through this."
Josh has cerebral palsy and spent time playing baseball, where he and his family met others in the special needs community.
Those friends have set up a trust fund for a father left to raise a family on his own.
"Caregiver burnout is a major concern for our families," says Janice Bushfield, Executive Director of the Cerebral Palsy Association. "Into adulthood, parents continue to be the primary caregiver," says Bushfield.
Bushfield says the costs can added up quickly. A modified bicycle can reach upwards of $2500. Modifications to a home can run close to $30,000. The Davey family recently immigrated to Canada, from England. Family members arriving in Calgary to lend their support are touched by the show of generosity.
"They had mentioned that Kevin and and Linda always said what a great city Calgary was," says Dorn. "...what wonderful people live here and they're getting to see that first hand."
Donations to help the survivors of the tragedy can be made at any RBC Royal Bank of Canada.
