"Defending the Prairie" Part 2
It's 6am and the soldiers who were lucky enough to make it back to the base to sleep on their army-issued cot are lining up for a hot breakfast before hitting the field for another day of training.
It's pouring rain but Pte. Tyson Edworthy of the Calgary Highlanders says it doesn't bother him, "It doesn't change a thing, come rain or shine, we have a job to do."
The job is a coordinated and simulated attack on Dundurnistan. Fellow soldiers act as the opposition forces and it is up to the infantry unit to take control of the village.
"We have suspected Taliban and IED teams within the village and we're tasked to disrupt and remove all Taliban influence from this village," says Lt. Jason Leek.
The 23 year-old Calgary Highlander is leading the exercise. After nearly six hours of briefing, rehearsals, gearing up the soldiers load onto the convoy and head for their point of attack.
It's war simulation but Lt.-Col. Charlie Miller of Edmonton says it's as close to the real thing as these soldiers will get until they go overseas.
