Rescuers desperately search through mounds of rubble for survivors, as the clock is ticks. China's death toll reaches 9000 and counting.
The 7.8 magnitude quake across the ocean has rocked Calgary's Chinese community.
"Shocked," Flora Liu describes her feeling as she learned of the news. "I have family members in Sichuan province and I also have a lot of friends in Shanghai," she says.
With family living in Sichuan province, the hardest hit area, Liu anxiously awaited word from back home the day the earthquake struck. "I'm very very worried," says Liu.
With thousands dead and another 10,000 believed to be injured, it's the worst disaster since an earthquake hit China in the late 70's.
Hundreds of thousands were killed in that quake. It's a memory many Chinese Canadians hoped never to relive.
"I think this experience is revitalizing those bad experiences," says Lily Kwok of the Calgary Chinese Community Association.
The local chapter of the Red Cross, says the local Chinese community has always stepped forward to support family and friends back home in times of need.
"This year in Calgary alone we raised $47,000, which was a quarter of the national amount raised for the blizzard disaster earlier this year," says Steven Armstrong, Regional Director of The Canadian Red Cross.
The Red Cross encourages money donations, which can be quickly wired to the Chinese Red Cross. The initial funding will help buy supplies for 5000 displaced families...without delay.
"We have a great relationship with the Chinese Red Cross, we've worked together for decades and decades," says Armstrong.
