Calgary slipping on list of Canada's best places to live.
Dropping behind Edmonton, Calgary is losing its appeal according to a report by Money Sense magazine.
The report looks at factors such as, income, unemployment, weather, attractions and unfortunately for this city, the cost of housing. Calgary does well until it scores poorly in house prices compared with family income. The report says, it costs 3.98 times the average yearly family income to buy a home in this city, higher than cities of a similar size. Calgary has gone down from 28th most desirable place to 35th. Edmonton has pretty much swapped places.
This news comes as no surprise to those who advocate for more affordable housing. "we are continuing to see new developments of higher end the sort of executive condos," says Grant Neufeld, Coordinator of the Calgary Housing Action Initiative, adding, "that is not anywhere close to meeting the needs of the majority of the people in this city."
