Monday's 7.8 magnitude earthquake in China is having effects on this side of the ocean. Although few in Calgary's Chinese community are from the area hit hardest by the quake, most are rallying to send food, aid and relief.
More than thirty community associations have come together under one name and with one common goal to fundraise. The Canadian Red Cross is providing guidance and some resources but leaving the bulk of the work to the community. Over the May long weekend volunteers will be out in full force at eight locations throughout the city collecting money from the public.
Jim Wong, director of the Calgary Chinese Community Service Association, says, " Our vision is to all pull together efficiency and coordination to collect somewhere between $100-150 thousand." The Canadian Red Cross is warning the public they do not solicit donations by going door to door, so be wary of possible scammers soliciting posing as Red Cross volunteers.
