Truck Safety Failures Still Too High
Police are still inspecting trucks and they are failing in large numbers... still.

The Calgary police service has been running roadside safety checks on big trucks for years, but the defect rate doesn't seem to be improving.

"It's a lot higher than it should be," according to Sergeant Blake Somerset. "We do have a lot of defects on the gravel hauling part of it, and on a lot of the smaller stuff."

Case in point: a Home Depot delivery truck was taken off the road at the Beacon Hill inspection station, because of faulty brakes, and no emergency brake at all. The truck was towed away.

Two city garbage trucks were also ruled unsafe, and grounded. Driver Brad Reichart says he knew the inspection was happening. "We drove by, through here, earlier, stopped for lunch, and came back. Minor infraction."

The "minor infraction" was a loose driveshaft, which meant the truck sat idle until a city mechanic showed up to fix it. In all, four of every ten trucks inspected at Beacon Hill were immediately taken off the road.

The police are also on the lookout for bad drivers. Sergeant Somerset says "There are a lot of drivers out there that I question their qualifications, and what they really know, and how well they've been trained."

Somerset says generally speaking, the big trucking companies invest a lot of time, and money, in rig maintenance and safety training. But, "some of the others are only interested in making money, and they're the ones we're really looking for."
