The Calgary Stampede is going Green.
"When you think about all the stuff that we throw out," says operations manager Gerry McHugh, "most of it is recyclable."
The Stampede recently obtained international certification, or ISO standard, for its waste and recycling programs, but McHugh concedes there's still a lot to do. For example, getting rid of the enormous, and polluting diesel generators which power the midway rides.
"They've already started sourcing out new generation," says McHugh. "And we're working at how we can do it. We've started this year putting bio-diesel in our generators in the park. We're looking at everything."
"Everything" includes restroom facilities, for men, that don't use water. The Stampede has also installed a solar powered trash compactor, and a deposit bin for plush toys.
