For Metro Calgary Laurence Heinen
Theo Fleury played hockey with unbridled enthusiasm and intensity.
Now, the former Calgary Flames captain plans to take the same approach to his debut with the Calgary Vipers on Saturday against the Yuma Scorpions.
"I'm probably the most fierce competitor that ever played the game of hockey," said Fleury after signing a contract with the Vipers on Thursday at Foothills Stadium. "I lived my life that way, so when I come here on Saturday I'll be mentally prepared to play. I don't want to be embarrassed, so I'll give everything I've got."
Manager Mike Busch has been impressed with Fleury's attitude while practising with the Vipers.
"I got a quote from Theo just when he came out," said Busch, while warming up to throw batting practice. "He's here to make the club. We'll activate him on Saturday and see what he's got."
Busch said Fleury might even help the Vipers break out of their recent slump.
"Maybe he'll spark the team some way."
