Recently I watched the film Calendar Girls and was amazed at how beautiful these wonderful actresses looked. And considering the nature of the film, these dolls took it off in true ladylike style. From a beauty perspective, these actresses looked remarkable on film. Yes lights, angles and makeup all play a role but the bare bones say it all. Take a lesson from our British girlfriends. Take care of your skin, keep the makeup simple and effective and know how to cover unflattering beauty concerns when they pop up. Experiment at night when you have more time to glam it up! Above all, have fun.
Face Facts
- Diligent Skin Care. Even neglected skin will benefit from a simple skin care routine. Keep it simple: cleanse, exfoliate, protect/moisturize and treat as needed.
- Concealer and Revealer. Two concealers suitable to your skin type will work magic and bring back youth. Use a skin tone colour to conceal facial discolourations and a lighter colour (half to one shade lighter than your complexion) to lift shadows and to change the angles of the face.
- Colour. A lively powder or cream blush in apricot, pink or plum gives the face life and radiance. Bronzing powder adds extra sunshine and warmth and can be mixed with blush.
- Shading. Use a matte bronzing powder to contour and define bone structure and to shade away the parts of the face that appear too loose, full or unattractive.
- Powder Power. This is the big forgotten answer to lasting makeup.
- Mineral Water Spray. Water instantly rehydrates, refreshes and revitalizes the skin.
Brow Buddies
Brows are even more important now. The best shape, colour and placement can shave years off. Here are the basic tools necessary to cut, tweeze, colour and shape.
- Spooly or brow groomer. Use as an eyebrow comb.
- Manicure scissors to trim long unruly hairs.
- Tweezers to maintain shape. Use daily.
- An eyebrow pencil to design, shape and fill in brows.
- Powder eyeshadow that works with your hair colour to add dimension.
- Angle brush to apply eyeshadow expertly.
- Clear or tinted brow gel mascara to groom, tint, set and seal brow makeup.
Eye Essentials to Create Bigger Eyes
- Master the use of concealer and highlighter.
- Eyelash curler or curling mascara. If lashes are of reasonable length, an eyelash curler will lift lashes revealing more of the eye and making it look more open and clearer. Mascara accentuates the effect.
- Liquid eyeliner. This is my number one trick to make eyes look great fast! It takes practice but it's worth it.
- Powder eye shadow in a flattering neutral shade to instantly and subtly shade the eye on days when they're slightly puffy.
For Full Luscious-looking Lips You Need
- Wax (morticians wax). An old Hollywood trick that creates a barrier around the lip line to prevent colour from travelling into creases.
- A natural shade lip liner such as a brown rose tone or a plum to define and shape the mouth. Fill in the lip for long lasting results.
- Three lipsticks. A feel good colour, a dazzling evening glam shade and a nude shade that matches your blush.
- Lip gloss. A pretty delicate shimmering pink and a clear gloss.
- Long lasting lipsticks.
