Make sure the cake you’re cutting at your wedding is as delicious as it is beautiful. And that requires proper planning and doing your homework. Lynn Spence shares tips on choosing a wedding cake and also shows the work of a local cake designer.
- Order your cake as early as possible. Preferably at least six months in advance.
- Ask to see the designer’s portfolio. Make sure this is work he or she has actually done.
- Sample their cakes and fillings.
- Meet with the cake designer and bring examples of cakes you like, a photograph of your gown, venue or bouquet or a fabric swatch from your dress. The designer can incorporate some of these elements into the cake design for a look that’s consistent with the rest of your wedding.
- Come with a budget in mind. Most designers charge by the slice and then multiply that price by the number of guests. And prices per slice can range from $7.50 to $15.00 and higher.
- You can reduce costs by displaying a small cake but feeding your guests with sheet cakes. After the cake cutting ceremony remove the cake and slice it out of sight.
