Think of your bridal bouquet as one of the most important accessories you’ll carry on your wedding day. So take into consideration not only your style and taste but also your dress and body type. Lynne Spence offers some tips on choosing a florist and a bouquet.

Tips

  • Order your flowers several months in advance. A good florist can be booked up to a year in advance.

  • Ask to see examples of the florist’s work.

  • Choose flowers that are in season. Ordering flowers that are out of season will cost hundreds of dollars more.

  • Choose flowers that are the right proportion for your height, size and style of dress. Generally shorter brides should carry a smaller bouquet; taller brides can carry a large bouquet or cascade. If your gown’s bodice has elaborate beadwork or lace choose a simpler, monochromatic bouquet. If your bodice is simpler you can choose a more extravagant arrangement.

  • Consider the time of day and season when choosing the colour of your arrangement.

  • Set a budget and stick to it.

  • Always give your florist a flower alternative. Weather can affect if a flower will be in good shape or available.

  • Bring photographs of bouquets you like.

  • Provide the florist with a photograph of your gown and if possible a fabric swatch. This is helpful when choosing the ribbon trim. Also bring a photograph of your cake, the invitations; anything that will help the designer create a bouquet that’s perfect for you.
