2004/02/26 | Dino Dilio

With shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and terms like metrosexual, men are no longer afraid to show that they care about their skin. In fact men are fighting for space at the beauty counter along side women. Dino Dilio outlines the basic steps to a good skincare routine.

Daily Essentials

Cleanser: To remove debris and pollution caused by the environment.

Toner: Optional extra step. Beneficial in the summer.

Two-in-one: Moisturizer with sunscreen.

  • Sunscreen: Minimum SPF 15 for anti-aging.
  • Moisturizer: Calms the skin after shaving, softens and protects.
Lip Balm: Softens, moisturizers and protects.

Body Lotion: Softens, moisturizes and protects. Takes the grey away. In the winter apply to knees, heels and elbows.

Weekly Maintenance

Scrub/Exfoliate: To rid the skin of dead skin cells, blackheads, and flakiness; 2-3 times a week in the shower. Don’t over rub!

Masks: To deep treat the skin. Use a clay based mask for oilier skin; cream masks for dry skin.

Make-up for Men

To fix a fading tan or boost a listless complexion use bronzing gel mixed with moisturizer or use a powder matte bronzer.

Tips

  • Shave after showering. Skin is softer, beard bristles standup, shaving is easier and more comfortable.

  • Apply creams to moist damp skin for better penetration.

  • Have a styptic stick handy for nasty nicks and cuts. Stops the bleeding.

  • Get a professional facial. This is the best way to have your skin assessed and treated appropriately. Home care product recommendations are included.
