Demo: Autumn Buffet Mirror

Materials:

-1 quart Benjamin Moore’s Fresh Start Latex Primer
-Benjamin Moore’s 2oz Colour Testers (in Shelburne Buff, Willow, Alexandria Beige, Black, and Warmed Cognac)
-1/2” Plywood, cut to 30”x30”
-Four 30” long pieces of 1x3 pine (with mitered corners to create frame)
-Drywall spackle
-Putty knife
-Leaves (real or faux)
-Small artist brushes
-Angled latex sash brush
-Construction adhesive
-6”x6” frameless beveled mirror
-Picture wire and hooks
-Wood screws
-Low tack painters tape
-Lint free cloth

How To:

-Prime the front of the ½” plywood board, and once dry, tape off the outer frame area and inner mirror area with low tack painters tape

-Apply a thin coat of drywall spackle over the exposed primed plywood (approx. 1/8” – 1/4" thick”), making sure to leave the finish rough and textured

-Allow the spackle to set for about 3-5 minutes, and then gently press the leaves onto the surface to create an imprint

-Using the back of an artist brush, draw branches in the spackle to connect the leaves and then remove painters tape (if you make a mistake, simply re-spackle and start design again)

-Once the plaster is dry, re-prime over all surfaces to seal and protect the finish

-Apply a basecoat of “Shelburne Buff” over entire plaster area

-Using a damp cloth, gently wash a layer of “Alexandria Beige” over basecoat

-Once dry, apply a second wash of “Willow” over the plaster area to create depth and complete the Venetian plaster look

-Using a small artist brush, fill in the leaf imprint with “Warmed Cognac” and the branches with “Willow”

-Using an angled sash brush, paint the 1”x3” pine frame pieces with “Black”

-Use construction adhesive to attach the mirror to the centre of the plywood

-Run a strip of construction adhesive around the outer perimeter of the plywood and apply the mitered frame pieces

-To ensure that the frame is secure, insert screws around the perimeter of the plywood from the back

-Finally, install picture wire and hooks on the back, and voila, it’s ready to hang…enjoy!
