New Toy Proves Dangerous
A weekend trip to the lake almost turned deadly for an Edmonton family. The Koperski's were having fun using this season's newest water toy when things spun out of control. The Wego kite tube flies through the air. It whips you across the lake like a normal inner tube but takes extreme sport to a whole new level. 21 year old Dallas Koperski was out for a ride at Garner Lake Monday. He got too much air and crashed 30 feet into the water.
"When it actually happened really all I remember is getting lifted up and obviously, gust of wind hit me. I kept on going higher, after that I don't remember anything," said Koperski.
His mom was driving the boat.
"I thought he died. We considered ourselves extremely fortunate," said LeeAnn Koperski.
The 21 year old seriously injured his head and neck. Paramedics rushed to his side. The manager at Ocean Sports says kite tubing is far too dangerous and will not sell them to customers.
"They actually have been banned in 2 states in the United States. They're just uncontrollable if you don't use them 100 per cent, things can go bad really quickly.
Barry Koperski says there are risks to any extreme sport but kite tubing is difficult to control in the best of weather conditions. "If you love your kids, you won't let them ride any type of wind kite because you'll have either a child who is dead or disabled."
A sports store in Edmonton that sells the flying tubes did not want to talk to us. But it did pull the last tube off its shelf.
