Okay, so by now everyone in the Universe knows that Sam Raimi's third chapter in the Spidey saga has already kicked off the summer of 2007 with a bang, but what else does this summer have in store for us? It's a summer of 3rd's, with Spiders, Pirates, and Ogres all making their third trip to the multiplex. There's a little something for everyone - some blockbusters, some…not so much.
May 18:
1.) Shrek the Third
2.) SEVERENCE: If you liked Shaun of the Dead - TRUST ME, you're going to LOVE Severence - another British horror/comedy hybrid that's truly scary, truly funny, and filled with ridiculously over the top gore. I've already seen this movie TWICE, and I honestly can't wait to see it again - it is a HOOT!
May 25:
3.) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
June 1:
4.) Mr. Brooks
5.) Rise: Blood Hunter
6.) Knocked Up: Judd Apatow's hotly-anticipated follow-up to my favorite comedy of the decade - The 40 Year Old Virgin - makes an unlikely leading man of slacker Seth Rogen, and allows the glorious Katherine Heigl to drop the Greys Anatomy mopiness behind and just have some fun. There's no one out there writing better comedy than Apatow - there's a lot more here than just raunchy sex jokes (which are on abundant display here) - there's real heart, which is what makes his films so special. I guarantee you won't see a funnier movie this year.
June 8:
7.) Ocean's Thirteen
8.) Surf's Up
9.) Hostel: Part II: I don't care what anybody says, Hostel was one of my favorite horror flicks of the last few years, and I can't wait to see what the seriously deranged Eli Roth has up his sleeve this time. One look at the posters for this, or Roth's truly memorable 'fake trailer' for Thanksgiving - and you know this guy's not playing with a full deck. Which, of course, is what makes his movies so fun!
June 15:
10.) Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
11.) Nancy Drew
June 22:
12.) A Mighty Heart
13.) Evan Almighty
14.) Black Sheep: Outrageously entertaining horror/comedy (yes, another one!) from New Zealand is almost as entertaining as Severance, and at least twice as funny. If you were ever a fan of Peter Jackson's splatter comedy classic, Dead Alive, then you're going to want to be first in line for this one.
June 27:
15.) Live Free or Die Hard: After YEARS of rumours, false starts, and rejected scripts, John McClane is FINALLY back, in the final chapter of the GREATEST ACTION SERIES OF ALL TIME!!! And I can't wait! The trailers are spectacular - if a little CG-heavy - and this is the role Bruce Willis was born to play. Welcome back, old friend…welcome back.
June 29:
16.) Ratatouille
17.) Martian Child
July 4:
18.) Transformers
July 13:
19.) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
20.) 1408: Now, I kinda have a sneaking suspicion that this is going to bite, BUT - I'm a huge fan of John Cusack - especially Identity - and Stephen King - especially The Shining - on whose short story this movie is based. Throw in Samuel L Jackson, and really…these ingredients are either going to live up to past glories…or make me run home and force me to watch Motel Hell for the umpteenth time...
July 20:
21.) Hairspray
22.) I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
23.) Talk to Me
July 27:
24.) The Simpsons Movie: Honestly - if you have to ask me WHY I'm on pins and needles waiting for the Simpsons Movie to brighten my summer…then go to your room and gorge yourself on the empty calories of Family Guy reruns - we don't want you at our little Simpsons party anyway! They are the first family of animation, and no matter what you may think of the last few seasons of the series, this is undeniably one of the most long-awaited movies of all-time.
Aug 3:
25.) Hot Rod
26.) The Bourne Ultimatum: The perfect post-Die Hard action movie series is the one "trilogy" film I'm most looking forward to this summer. Go back and watch Good Will Hunting, then try and picture little Matt Damon as 'action hero'…hunh - who knew?! Jason Bourne has been described as "the thinking man's James Bond" - and after seeing how much Casino Royale was obviously inspired by this series, it's hard not to argue.
Aug 10:
27.) Rush Hour 3
28.) Stardust
Aug 17:
29.) Wedding Daze
30.) The Invasion
31.) SUPERBAD: Because it's co-written by Knocked Up's Seth Rogen. Directed by Greg Mottola, a veteran of Judd Apatow's brilliant, if short-lived series Undeclared. And because it stars Michael Cera - so perfect as George Michael on Arrested Development. With such pedigree, the ingredients are here for another raunchy late-summer sleeper - ala Wedding Crashers or 40 Year Old Virgin.
Aug 24:
32.) The Comebacks
33.) Good Luck Chuck
Aug 31:
34.) The Brothers Solomon: …and if for some reason Superbad turns out to be…super…ummm…bad - or even if it turns out great - another wannabe raunchy late-summer sleeper hit is on the horizon…a mere 2 weeks later. The Brothers Solomon stars two of my absolute favorites - the great Will Arnett and the magnificent Jenna Fischer - along with very funny SNL vets Will Forte and Kristin Wiig. The trailer is promising, so we'll see…
35.) Rob Zombie's Halloween: And finally, because it's apparently NEVER too early to celebrate the scariest holiday of the year, Dimension Films is treating us to an early Halloween this year…Rob Zombie style! Not a sequel, not a remake - this is being described as a complete "re-imagining" of the horror CLASSIC. Part of me is completely aghast that anyone would even attempt to remake John Carpenter's masterpiece - but if it HAS to be done, well, I must admit I'm really intrigued that it's in Rob Zombie's more than capable hands, and since I'm pretty much a sucker for ANY horror movie…well, count me in.
Hope this has given you some ideas for some summer movie pleasure - until we meet again - have a great summer everyone!
