The Greenbelt is an area of protected greenspace, farmland, and vibrant communities, forests, wetlands and watersheds. It surrounds the province's Golden Horseshoe - the most populated area of Canada - and is vital to the quality of life in southern Ontario.
The Greenbelt preserves some of the best agricultural land in Canada, which in turn provides fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, beef, pork and poultry products and grapes for prize-winning wines. Essential for providing clean air and water, its trees act as “lungs” for the area, and filter air pollution, while rivers and streams feed sources of drinking water for millions of people.
The Greenbelt was created by legislation in February of 2005 to protect key environmentally sensitive land and farmlands from urban development and sprawl. It covers more than 1.8 million acres - an area larger than Prince Edward Island - and includes the Niagara Escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine and Rouge Park. The Greenbelt provides an abundance of outdoor activities like hiking, bird-watching, cycling, fruit-picking, weekend getaways and skiing.
