Howard and Foster Walk Red Carpet For The Brave One

Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster and her The Brave One costar Terrence Howard (pictured) walked the red carpet Thursday on the first night of the 32nd annual Toronto International Film Festival.

Film fans crowded around the Ryerson Theatre, where the Neil Jordan film premiered, to catch a glimpse of the stars. The Irish director's latest tells the story of a woman's disturbing transformation after a brutal attack leaves her boyfriend dead and nearly kills her.

It arrives in theatres next Friday, a week after its film festival presentation.

Meanwhile, across town at Roy Thomson Hall, Canadian director Jeremy Podeswa premiered his new film Fugitive Pieces. Based on the acclaimed novel by Anne Michaels, the film, about a child's escape from Poland during World War II, had its Gala opening at the festival.

"It was daunting and exciting," Podeswa, 45, said of deciding to make the film.

"Daunting because the book was so popular and so embraced by a really faithful audience, and I felt like I really didn't want to disappoint the fans of the book. The task was to satisfy the readership and at the same time satisfy Anne Michaels, who I really respect enormously. I wanted her to be happy with this adaptation."
