CityNews.ca's Brian McKechnie takes a look at some of the films playing at TIFF09.
The Loved Ones *CityNews.ca Pick*
Australians make crazy horror films (Wolf
Creek for instance) and The Loved Ones is no exception. Described as Pretty in Pink meets Misery, this is one sick and twisted flick that
should get the Midnight Madness crowd pumped. Besides the blood and
guts it also has great cinematography and should propel director Sean
Byrne into the spotlight. Schedule at TIFF.
Daybreakers
When there are more vampires than humans in
the world there is not enough blood to go around. That's the premise
behind the refreshingly unique Daybreakers, starring Ethan Hawke, Sam
Neill and Willem Dafoe. The film is beautifully shot and the effects
are clean and crisp. Should please both horror and non-horror fans. Schedule at TIFF.
Suck
Get past the horrible musical performances and Suck
is a fun, cheesy rock n' roll vampire film. Written and directed by Rob
Stefaniuk (Phil the Alien) the film features Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop,
Moby (playing a heavy metal singer that at one point is pelted with raw
meat), Henry Rollins, Dave Foley (Kids in the Hall) and Carole Pope. Schedule at TIFF.
