Grown Up Movie Star is the definition of a Canadian film. Set in
Newfoundland and starring a Newfoundlander (Shawn Doyle from
HBO's Big Love), it's got ex-NHL players smuggling drugs, a woman
who abandons her family, a teenager (played by 25-year-old Tatiana
Maslany) who hopes to become a star in the U.S., and lots of sex (gay
and straight). Underneath the controversial surface though it's a
wonderful story about a family who comes together when everything around
them has fallen apart. It's also extremely funny at times thanks to
Doyle and Maslany.
I spoke with writer and first-time director
Adriana Maggs about the film before she left for the Sundance Film
Festival where it was having its world premiere. We talked about her
first experience behind the camera, how she felt getting into Sundance,
and how she snagged the band Elliott BROOD to do the soundtrack. Watch
the full interview below.
Grown Up Movie Star opens in
Toronto on January 29 at Scotiabank Theatre. For more information visit
the film's official site.
