This Movie Captures Toronto Beautifully

Even if you're not a fan of the Toronto-based band Broken Social Scene, seeing them live is an experience you'll never forget. They have a great stage presence and know how to keep the audience excited, often being joined by special guests Feist, Emily Haines of Metric, and Amy Millan of Stars (not to mention the other 12 to 14 regular members of the group). I've seen them live three times and each time is better, and different, than the last. This could be the reason filmmaker Bruce McDonald wanted to make a dramatic concert film centered on them. Mixing footage from their free show at the Harbourfront back in July of 2009 -- in the middle of the Toronto garbage strike -- with a romantic storyline written by Don McKellar and starring Georgina Reilly (Pontypool) and Greg Calderone (Howie Do It), the film not only captures a great BSS concert but also documents a moment in time in Toronto beautifully. It's also one of the coolest films set here ever made.

CityNews.ca spoke with McDonald and Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning about the making of the film. Watch the full interview below.

This Movie is Broken opens in theatres on June 25. Find out more about the film at thismovieisbroken.com.
