Some of the hottest Broadway musicals are coming to Toronto beginning in July.
Mirvish Productions unveiled its 2012-13 season in Toronto on Monday, featuring
Backbeat, La Cage aux Folles, Sister Act, Honeymoon in Vegas, The Wizard of Oz and
The Book of Mormon.
"It's an all-musical season, although each show is also full of drama, comedy and spectacle, perhaps our most amazing ever. I say that every year, but I really believe it this time," David Mirvish joked at a news conference.
Backbeat, directed by David Leveaux, is about John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe, and how they became the Beatles. The musical, which features classics including
Love Me Do, PS I Love You and
Twist & Shout, will run July-August.
Winner of three Tony Awards,
La Cage aux Folles stars George Hamilton and Christopher Sieber. It’s about Georges, the owner of a glitzy nightclub in lovely Saint-Tropez, and his partner Albin, who moonlights as the glamor¬ous chanteuse Zaza. Georges’ son brings his fiancée’s parents home, and relationships are put to the test.
Sister Act, directed by Jerry Zaks, is about Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva, whose life changes when she witnesses a crime and police hide her in a convent. It features original music by eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken.
Honeymoon in Vegas, which will have its world premiere in December, is a musical comedy starring Tony Danza from Who's The Boss fame. The musical is based on the film about Jack who goes to Sin City with his girlfriend Betsy for a whirlwind weekend.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of
The Wizard of Oz is an adaptation of the all-time classic re-conceived for the stage. It has all the songs from the Oscar-winning movie score, and all the favourite characters, including Dorothy, Toto and the Wicked Witch of the West. Performances will begin January 2013.
Winner of nine Tony Awards,
The Book of Mormon features music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone. The musical, which will run May-June next year, been sold out elsewhere for weeks.
