Corey Haim’s family and the city of Toronto are attempting to put an end to the rumours circulating about who will cover the cost of the actor’s funeral.
CityNews spoke with a family member -- who didn’t want to be named -- who strongly denied an Access Hollywood report that Haim’s mother said the city would cover the expenses for Tuesday’s funeral in Thornhill.
The funeral home, Steeles Memorial Chapel, is apparently picking up the tab.
And the city of Toronto issued a release Sunday stating it wouldn’t comment on the matter. Due to the massive media interest in the celebrity story officials then issued another release Monday.
"The City of Toronto has never received an application for assistance with the funeral costs for Mr. Haim.
"While the City would normally not confirm or deny the existence of an application for assistance with funeral benefits as this is a matter covered by Privacy regulations; given the number of reports the City has chosen to confirm the facts in this matter."
Haim was pronounced dead in a Burbank, CA. hospital Wednesday. He was 38.
The actor reportedly had an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs when he died. Reports suggest he’d been taking painkillers obtained with an illegal prescription.
The Los Angeles County coroner's office has not yet released an official cause of death. Toxicology reports are expected in about six weeks.
Haim was living with his mother, who’s battling breast cancer, when he died. Longtime friend Corey Feldman said he was broke and owed the U.S. government $200,000 in taxes.
