Two teenaged trustees with Toronto District School Board are asking their elder peers to consider outlawing homework for students on weekends, March Break, and even over Christmas holidays.
The idea has garnered mixed reactions.
"I think it (too much homework) could be detrimental if it's causing the child an undue amount of stress, and that needs to be dealt with on an individual basis," said Sue Neville
Vice Principal, Lord Dufferin Public School.
The Toronto District School Board has guidelines on how much homework students should be doing. By the end of grade 3, no more than 30 minutes, and in grade 6, 60 minutes. By the time a student hits grade 12, they can be assigned two hours of homework a night.
"By putting out these guidelines the idea is every child will get used to that as part of their life," said parent and high school teacher Krystyne Carruthers.
Just last week the school board took steps that would could one day ban teachers from asking for assignments or major activities in the four days leading up to an exam. The idea is to make sure students aren't too stressed out to study for them.
