Rogers Communications Inc. has launched a new home-monitoring service that lets customers remotely manage their home security system, thermostats, lights, webcams and small appliances from a computer or smartphone.

Rogers, the parent company of Citytv, said Wednesday “the heart of the system” is a tablet-style touchpad to control home security functions and home automation apps for lighting, cameras and thermostats. The touchpad also has software to view photos, traffic and weather conditions, as well as sports scores.

“From remotely controlling thermostat levels to scheduling lights to turn on when you get home, this new system delivers a connected personalized experience at home, at work or on-the-go,” Rogers said in a statement.

The product line includes 24-hour security monitoring by the Rogers Central Monitoring Station to dispatch emergency services in case of a break-in, fire or medical emergency. The system also monitors water leaks, carbon monoxide levels and room temperature to remotely adjust heat or air-conditioning.

When an alarm occurs, the touchpad connects with the Rogers monitoring station over Rogers’ cable and wireless networks, the company said.

It also has a web-based camera system to monitor what’s going on in your home via an Internet-connected computer or smartphone. Those cameras can also send a photo via text message or email when someone walks through your front door or when another sensor is triggered.

Plans for the monitoring start range from $39.99 to $57.99 per month. It is currently available for Ontario Rogers Hi-Speed Internet customers.
