It was two years ago that Bruce Straby found a small deer on the side of the road.
He and his wife decided to bring the animal home to their farm to raise it as a pet, not knowing that it was illegal to do so.
The animal has since been removed from their custody.
"I miss her so much now that, you know, as you can see I don't get much sleep," said Straby.
It's been almost two weeks since the deer, named Bam-Bam, has been taken from the family.
"Why is it now today better off in a small pen than it was where we had it?"
In December the province confiscated Bam-Bam, citing the law against domesticating wildlife.
Bam-Bam was facing euthanasia when the Papanack Zoo near Ottawa took her in.
"It wasn't our decision to take her and a lot of people are upset with us for taking her," said the Zoo's Keith Forgie.
"But if we didn't we also know that there was a good chance she would have been euthanized."
Supporters have collected 7,000 signatures on petitions to bring Bam-Bam home. An M.P.P. has also asked the province to give the Strabys a special permit to keep the animal, but so far they haven't received a response.
"I will pay the same price any hunter pays to go and get a deer," Straby adds.
"I will pay the fine. Whatever it takes, I'll bring her home."
