Across the province, students’ test scores are improving.

But Ontario pupils still aren’t making the grade.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released the results of the latest rounds of standardized tests on Monday.

Most students in Ontario – 68 per cent of those enrolled in Grade 3 and 6 – are meeting reading, writing and math standards.

For reading, 62 per cent of Grade 3 and 72 per cent of Grade 6 students meet stands. For writing, it's 70 per cent for both Grade 3 and 6 students. And as for math, 71 per cent of Grade 3 students have good grasp of the curriculum, compared to 61 per cent of Grade 6 students, 40 per cent of Grade 9 students in the applied stream, and 82 per cent of Grade 9 students in the academic stream.

But the province had set a target of 75 per cent.

Earlier this month, the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario called for a moratorium on EQAO testing.

“Something is very wrong when areas including science, history, social studies and the arts are getting sidelined in the race to get young students prepared for EQAO, which is focused solely on literacy and math,” ETFO President Sam Hammond argued.

Next month, the EQAO will release individual school and board reports and two full provincial reports.
