Ontario’s acting chief coroner plans to probe all drownings in the province over the past few months.

Dr. Bert Lauwers is undertaking this analysis to identify some of the common elements in the deaths and to make recommendations to prevent similar tragedies.

Lauwers plans to review the details of all drownings between May and August 2010. He plans to release his findings to the public.

A study conducted by the Lifesaving Society released earlier this month suggests immigrants face a significantly higher risk of dying in a water-related incident as compared to people born in Canada.

One-third of the new Canadians questioned for the study admitted they were nervous around water.

Lauwers is encouraging every one to learn how to swim, regardless of age, and is reminding parents to keep a close eye on kids playing in and around water.
