City Slaps Storm-Trapped Car With Parking Tickets

Toronto residents Tom and Elizabeth Koukodimos got a very unpleasant surprise after Tuesday's storm.

While the heavy rains came crashing down a large branch fell on the roof of their car that was parked on the street right outside their Milverton Blvd. home. As a result, the couple who normally leave it in a designated parking spot were unable to move it after the bad weather subsided.

Not only was the branch too big to remove themselves, but they had to call the City so crews could come and do the job. And to make matters worse, while the Koukodimos' patiently continue to wait to get the mess cleared they got slapped with a parking ticket.

"There was a bright yellow parking tag on the windshield of the car. I was just shocked and so were the neighbours," said Elizabeth. "It was unacceptable, there's no way I could have moved my car."

Residents aren't allowed to park on the street after midnight and that's when the couple planned to move their vehicle, but they just couldn't. They said parking enforcement should have made an exception. "The monkeys running the show should teach the people working for them common sense," said Tom.

Gordon Megson, 76, agrees with the couple because he was given a $60 ticket while parked and asleep in the driver's seat. "What if I had been dead? I couldn't pay the ticket. It would have been a waste of effort," he said.

Parking authorities won't comment on either case because it's still before the courts, but it said all officers use their own discretion when issuing tickets.
