The Stupidest Job Interview Mistakes In History

There are a lot of ways to land a job. What follows aren't really any of them. A British survey has revealed some of the most bizarre responses ever heard from applicants who were looking to land posted positions with various companies. It was taken by Careerbuilder.com, a British online site that seeks to match the perfect candidate with the perfect opening.

Human resources managers were asked to list the strangest things they'd ever seen in a job interview. And the results are enough to make you wonder if any of these people ever landed any paid positions anywhere.

In one case, an applicant was asked why he wanted to work for a company. His answer was jaw dropping. "Because I fancy the girl who works in reception," he told the man who would never be his boss.

Another was pointed about his demands. He refused to travel for his job whenever his favourite soccer team was playing at home.

Then there's the would-be drone who insisted on performing magic tricks during the interview and the woman who kept giving hints that she murdered her husband.

Another guy wouldn't stop checking his BlackBerry, which he not so successfully tried to hide under the desk during the interrogation.

One candidate brought a CD boom box in with him and continually played a song with the lyrics "I feel good," as the manager tried to ask him questions.

And a worker who's likely still unemployed was blunt when grilled about his career goals. "I don't have any particular ambitions for advancement," he shrugged, "as long as I am paid a lot more in five years time."

And how could you resist the sales applicant who was asked how he would handle a difficult client? He told the interviewer he had the perfect solution - wrestle his clients to the ground instead of trying to work out any differences.

But our favourite has to be the hapless schnook who showed up on time, was led into the manager's office and discovered that he'd gotten to the wrong job interview with the wrong company on the wrong day.

While you're never likely to be quite this stupid, job hunting experts say there are mistakes ordinary people sometimes make that sink their chances of landing an opening. Appearing disinterested is a real sin that managers pick up on. Being overly confident bordering on arrogance is another no-no. And saying anything negative about a previous employer will get you shown the door before you even get in it.

Other things to watch for: not dressing properly for the job; avoiding direct answers; and not making a good impression by asking poorly thought out questions.

"Interviews give employers an opportunity to see what it is really like to work with a candidate -- how they respond when under pressure, what motivates them and how they relate to others," explains CareerBuilder's Tony Roy. "If a candidate is too negative, is not prepared for the interview or is easily flustered, it usually reflects poorly on the candidate's abilities. Be well-informed about the company, practice answers to potential questions and always maintain a professional demeanor."

And oh yeah - if you can, leave the CD player at home.
