Gas Down To 66.5 Cents On Christmas Day

Remember that old dance called The Limbo? The expression that accompanied the challenge was "how low can you go?"

Motorists in the GTA are also asking that question, with yet another drop in the price of gas coming for Christmas Day. This special Xmas present promises to save you some money - the price for a litre of regular on Thursday will drop another 2.4 cents to 66.5 cents.

That's the lowest we've seen here since the 65.1 you were paying the week of March 9, 2004. And no one knows if we're done yet.

"Years," notes Fred Barnes about the new rate, after shelling out only $35 to fill up his car. "It's been a long time."

Cab drivers, who had been hit hard when gas prices skyrocketed to $1.35 a litre or more in July also have something to smile about. "I am saving $5, it's not bad," points out Tanher Chowdry. "My lunch money comes out."

Still, there was an eerie deja vu at some gas stations across the GTA Wednesday morning. About 30 of them were displaying marquees that read "0.00." That's because many had actually run out of regular altogether.

The weather, along with a mechanical failure at the giant Sunoco distribution depot at Keele and Finch, caused a shortage and left some stations empty of the precious liquid.

It brought back memories of February 2007 when a fire at a refinery in Nanticoke created severe shortages across the province.

And while the problem was quickly fixed, getting the refilled trucks back in gear in the middle of yet another snowstorm proved to be a challenge.

Some places were forced to sell premium for the new cheap price, to the delight of customers.

While most stations have since refueled, traffic is lighter than normal. But with thousands of people travelling during the holidays, that new 66.5 cent greeting wherever they go will be a welcome sight.

And for many, it's an early Christmas gift they hope will last well into the New Year.

How low can it go? It's impossible to say but long disgruntled motorists seem content to fill up now and answer that question later. The current price is the lowest we've seen in the GTA since 2004. Here's a look at the highest and lowest prices reached here over the past decade - and where you can find the best one right now.
