Once again people around the globe are embracing the power of social media in the face of tragedy, using online tools to track down loved ones and share images of their personal experiences after the natural disaster in Japan.

Google launched a revised version of its Person Finder tool after the earthquake hit Japan Friday. The online tool was used during the New Zealand earthquake last month.



More than 7,000 records were listed by 10:15am Friday. Google also launched a crisis response page for earthquake-related information.

Several people have uploaded first-person accounts of the earthquake and its aftermath onto YouTube.

And Twitter was used to send messages of support to those directly affected by the quake, offer thoughts on media coverage and share images of the natural disaster.
