DNA tests have confirmed with 99.9 per cent certainty that Osama bin Laden was indeed killed by U.S. special forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The U.S has now put its embassies on high alert, warning Americans that al-Qaeda would “almost certainly” try to avenge bin Laden’s death.

It took just 40 minutes for U.S Navy Seals to capture the world’s most wanted man, sending countless people across the world and especially in the U.S into a state of jubilation.

As word of the September 11th mastermind’s death reached every corner of the globe Monday, U.S. President Barack Obama spoke out.

"Today we are reminded that as a nation there is nothing we can't do," he said.

Nearly a decade after the 2001 attacks on the Twin Towers, bin Laden was killed in a mansion in Abbottabad, Pakistan, Obama revealed.

His compound is said to have been situated about 185 metres from the Pakistan Military Academy, an elite training centre which is the country’s equivalent to the West Point Academy.

He was buried at sea on Monday morning in order to prevent any grave site from becoming a shrine and in order to be in accordance with Islamic tradition that burial take place within 24 hours.

“Justice has been done,” Obama said from the White House, where a growing crowd congregated outside, cheering the news and chanting "USA! USA!"

Obama said he received intelligence concerning bin Laden's whereabouts in August, and he authorized an operation last week to capture or kill him.

President Obama stressed that the U.S. is not at war with Islam.

"bin Laden was not a Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims. His demise should be welcome by all who believe in peace and human dignity."

"The American people did not choose this fight," he added.  "It came to our shores. … Yet as a country we will never tolerate our security being threatened."

"Nearly 3,000 citizens were taken from us, leaving a gaping hole in our hearts,” he continued, referring to the 9/11 attacks, which toppled the World Trade Center towers in New York and targeted the Pentagon in Washington, sparking the war on terror and propelling bin Laden into the halls of international infamy.

Previous to the 9/11 attacks, bin Laden was also deemed to be involved in the 1998 bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and the 2000 bombing of the warship USS Cole in Yemen.

Former U.S. President George W. Bush, who was in office when the 9/11 terror attacks were executed in 2001, called bin Laden's death at the hands of American forces a "momentous achievement."

"The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done," Bush said in a statement.

News of the death of the world’s most wanted, and most elusive man sent the online world into a frenzy.

Twitter said it recorded the "highest sustained rate of Tweets ever" on Sunday evening, when an average of 3,440 tweets per second were sent between 10:45 p.m. EST and 12:30 a.m. EST.
