Less than two weeks after losing her mother, brother and stepfather in a devastating car crash in Jamaica, a Brampton teen is fighting to stay positive.
“I just try to think about it as my mom in a better place. My mom, my brother and my stepdad, they’re all in a better place right now,” said 14-year-old Kyatra George.
Garieno Dixon, 27, mother Diane, 32, and their two-year-old Ronaldinho Dixon were killed in a crash near Kingston as they were rushing to a local hospital after the family awoke to find the toddler not breathing.
The child's 45-year-old grandmother, Marie Myrie-Smith of Jamaica, was also killed.
The family was booked to return to Canada on Jan. 15, where the parents were permanent residents and the child was a citizen.
“My mom was a really energetic person. She was nice to everybody that she met, and she would always try to lend you her hand in any way that she could,” said Kyatra.
“It’s really hard for me, because I will never see her again, to talk with her. So it’s hard,” said Kyatra’s aunt Evadne Henry.
The family was offered words of condolence at a special service at their local church Sunday.
“It’s just all for support, comfort and solace. We know it’s a very sad time. Tragedy strikes at any time – it’s never expected,” said Pastor Omar Palmer
The family will leave for Jamaica this Tuesday, Jan. 17. The funeral for all three victims will take place Jan. 22.
