Two Australian teens are facing charges after a Canadian man who uses a wheelchair was brutally attacked and robbed, leaving him in a Sydney hospital.
The suspects, 15 and 16 years old, approached and verbally assaulted the 35-year old from Winnipeg while he was waiting for a late-night train Tuesday, according to New South Wales Police.
The suspects then pushed the man out of his wheelchair and allegedly punched him in the face as he tried to enter an elevator to escape the pair. While the man was lying on the floor the teens stomped on him and hit him with metal bars – reportedly from his wheelchair - before robbing him and taking off, according to authorities.
The pair then returned and allegedly continued the beating.
The attack lasted about five minutes and was captured on surveillance cameras.
The victim, who is in Australia on a year-long work visa, suffered serious injuries and had to have surgery for severe cuts to his head and a skull fracture.
The two teens have been denied bail and charged with assault and robbery, but cannot be identified because of their ages.
"It's probably one of the most serious attacks that I've seen," says Superintendent Wayne Cox of the Mount Druitt police.
The victim of the attacks, who does not wish to be identified, was involved in a snowmobile accident about ten years ago. He is in Australia visiting his girlfriend.
"He is a wonderful, kind, generous individual," the man's girlfriend Kristin Sharrock told the
Sydney Morning Herald. "He's been through a lot in his life and he doesn't deserve what's happened."
