Just over a week after a massive earthquake devastated parts of Chile a series of strong aftershocks rocked the nation Thursday.
The temblors registered magnitudes of 5,1, 7.2, 6.9 and 6.0. The events shook buildings in the capital of Santiago and prompted some nervous moments in the coastal town of Valparaiso as dignitaries arrived for the inauguration of President-elect Sebastian Pinera.
Pinera urged citizens along the coast to move to higher ground after the Chilean Navy issued a tsunami warning. The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quakes weren’t large enough to trigger the dangerous waves.
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake
hit Chile on Feb. 27 and claimed more than 800 lives. The quake left more than half a million people homeless and prompted
widespread looting in the hard-hit city of Concepcion.
