Hundreds of people took to the streets of Toronto Saturday to denounce Israel’s actions against a flotilla heading for Gaza earlier this week.
Chants of “Free Palestine” echoed as the group marched outside the Israeli consulate.
Opposing sides, separated by Bloor St. shouted at each other as tensions built much like Friday’s volatile demonstration.
The incident that sparked these protests happened May 31, when six ships bringing aid and around 700 activists into Gaza were ordered to stop by Israeli soldiers.
The soldiers rappelled onto the ship, which was in international waters. Nine activists were killed, and five soldiers were wounded.
The Israeli government later released a video showing people on board apparently attacking the soldiers with clubs and throwing one soldier overboard.
Pro-Israel supporters waved flags in support of the country’s actions against the flotilla, telling 680News the humanitarian aid ship was also in possession of arms.
The pro-Palestinian activists are calling on Ottawa to stand up for the activists.
People aboard the ship have always maintained it only contained food, toys and other aid supplies for the people of Gaza.
Similar demonstrations are also planned for Halifax, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
