The ex-girlfriend of an 18-year-old murdered in 2006 pleaded guilty to manslaughter Tuesday, bringing an end to the month-long trial which began with her facing a charge of first-degree murder.
Jacqueline Levesque was sentenced to 16 years minus the three already served in the death of Jermaine Watson. She pleaded not guilty to the initial murder charge.
Levesque told Watson's family she flew into a jealous rage when she saw a photo of Jermaine's new girlfriend holding their eight-month old daughter.
"
I loved my baby father, I didn't want that to happen, I'm sorry," she said.
Watson's mother testified she received a call from Jacqueline prior to the murder, in which she suggested her son, "deserves a bullet to the head."
Lynn Watson said she called Jermaine to warn him, but the warning was dismissed by the young man who said the ex-girlfriend didn't know his new address.
He was found dead in his Scarborough Golf Club Road apartment.
Also charged with first-degree murder is a male who allegedly accompanied Jacqueline into the apartment armed with a gun.
Victim impact statements were read by Watson's parents. His father couldn't finish his, relating the way Levesque was, "like our daughter."
Watson had been accepted into the Canadian armed forces and wanted to become a police officer.
Crown Rita Koehl told the court Levesque's "planning and action caused his death. She is as responsible for his death as if she had pulled the trigger herself for allowing armed thugs into his home."
The couple's three-year-old daughter now lives with Watson's parents.
