Section Of Front Street Still Closed Due To Ice Hazard

Authorities closed down a section of Front Street again Saturday morning as a precaution over fears more pieces of ice will fall from the CN Tower.

Front Street between John and York was closed off Friday afternoon after sheets of ice peeled away from the structure and fell on the street below, smashing a car window and hitting buildings in the area. The same portion of road was off-limits Saturday.

So far there have been no reports of injuries.

"When we realized what was happening with the sudden warm weather that we experienced yesterday and the fact that it was causing the ice to melt the way it was, we jumped into action and contacted the police and secured the area," CN Tower spokeswoman Irene Knight said Saturday.

"So basically, at this point, we're continuing to work diligently with them to ensure we are rerouting people in the area and making sure that they are taking safe routes to wherever they need to go in the downtown area."

Knight said it's hard to determine if any more ice will crumble off the building and that's why the street has been closed as a precaution.

The CN Tower is open, but visitors will have to access it and other businesses in the area through particular routes.

"The best route is Front Street, west of the tower, to approach from that access point and there are covered ways to get through to the tower," Knight advised.
