Family Laments Loss Of TTC Victim

If you're on the TTC anywhere late Monday morning, be prepared for a slight delay.

The system will grind to a halt for one minute at 11am as a silent tribute to a lost colleague.

All subways, buses and streetcars will stop as close to the moment as possible to remember Tony Almeida, the 38-year-old killed earlier this week in an accident inside a subway tunnel.

The decorated five-year veteran of the service was among a crew of 11 cleaning asbestos from the underground between Lawrence and Eglinton when some unsecured scaffolding came loose and crashed into the front of the car he was driving.

He died from his injuries and two others were hurt.

Part of the subway was shut down all day as hundreds of thousands of passengers were forced to board crowded shuttle buses.

The probe into what happened and why is ongoing, but the reasons aren't the main focus of the family, still grieving over the loss of the father of two young children.

They'll be concentrating instead on their momories at Almeida's funeral, which will also be held on Monday, starting at 9:30am at St. Anthony's Catholic Church near Bloor and Rusholme Road.
