Pastor Calls For End To Revealing Clothing In Church

Father William Swift wants to assure that rising temperatures don't coincide with plummeting necklines --- at least not in his church.

Swift, a priest at Holy Cross Church on Cosburn Ave., has made a very public plea, asking parishioners to dress appropriately when attending mass.

"Just being able to be focus on the spiritual," he said.  "Just try to make the conditions really good for praying."

Swift believes low-cut dresses, short skirts and other revealing clothing aren't suitable for the church environment.

"My point is that it's a distraction, just like it would be a distraction to be noisy in a library," he argues.

Reverend Swift had the dress code printed and posted on the church's bulletin board, asking parishioners to be modest and not to upstage God by drawing undue attention onto themselves.

He also, however, admits he would rarely ask someone to leave due to their dress.

"It would have to be very, very extreme."
