GTA Escapes Wrath Of Huge Storm That Pounded U.S.

If you got up early on Thursday, it may still have been pitch black out and your mood may have been grey.

But the one colour you wouldn't have seen was white.

Because temperatures stayed on the plus side overnight, the GTA was spared the worst of winter's April wrath, as a huge storm brought only rain to the city and not the heavy wet snow that could have caused traffic chaos.

Forecasters were hedging their bets all day on the disturbance, warning it could go either way and that the downtown core would get mostly water, while those past the 401 were more likely to see a mixed and moist mess.

Fortunately, it didn't happen and it all fell only as rain.

Those farther north did see some accumulation but in the city, it wasn't the snow that wound up being the real problem.

Winds gusting up to 63 kilometres an hour are believed responsible for toppling a 12-storey high construction crane at Wellesley and Parliament late Wednesday night, forcing a temporary road closure and blacking out hydro for area residents for a time.

No one was hurt and the Ministry of Labour is looking into what happened.

And the wind almost blew away some traffic on the Gardiner Expressway early in the morning. The stiff breeze toppled a sign that was left dangling dangerously from an overpass, distracting drivers and almost causing several crashes.

The storm blew itself out and moved off before sunrise, although there could be showers right through the weekend.

But we got off easy.

The same system brought chaos to areas of the U.S., which is still reeling from a combination of snow, ice and rain.

Six people were killed in two separate weather-related accidents in Iowa.

A 70-car pile-up near Minneapolis left two people hurt as drivers tried to navigate through 20 centimetres of frosted flakes.

Sections of northern Illinois were clobbered by 15 centimetres of snow, with nearly 4 more still to come.

Milwaukee was shoveling out from 17 centimetres, a record for the date. North and South Dakota also got about the same amount.

Power was out in many areas and flights were cancelled or delayed as unseasonable conditions made life miserable.

Even the boys of summer were forced to make concessions, with the Astros-Cubs game in Chicago being called because of snow.

For now, the worst is over and there's a warm-up on the way for next week.

But ever weary and ever wary residents of both the GTA and the U.S. Midwest are scanning the skies wondering just when Old Man Winter will finally pack his bags and get out of town for good.
